The original beach rescue series has become one of Channel Ten’s most popular series, winning Gold Logies in 2009, 2010 and 2011 for ‘Most Popular Factual’ TV show, and is back for a fourth season. Over the summer, Australian Television audiences were introduced to the dramatic world of the Bondi Lifeguards, the real life heroes who patrol one of the world's busiest beaches.
In Bondi Rescue the audience sees the action through the eyes of real characters and lifeguards like Reidy, Maxi, Deano, Corey, Harries, Kerrbox and head Lifeguard Hoppo who deal with anything from shark scares to mass rescues, resuscitations, lost children, thieves and perverts. Their larrikin humour teamed with their ability to save lives has charmed beachgoers and viewers alike.
Bruce Hopkins (Hoppo):
The man in charge is well respected by all the team due to his years of experience and calmness in dealing with all situations. Hoppo’s good looks and quintessential Australian charm make him a great brand ambassador for Aussie brands and speaking engagements. Hoppo has been an ambassador for Holeproof for the past 3 years.
Anthony Carroll (Harries):
Senior Lifeguard ‘Harries’, the quirkiest of all the Bondi rescue boys keeps viewers on their toes with his constant pranks and infectious laugh. His striking physique and approachable nature, has made Harries a source of fascination for women curious about his peculiar ways. Harries, along side Hoppo and Deano is also an ambassador for Holeproof.
Dean Gladston (Deano):
In series two, Senior Lifeguard Deano won audience hearts by proposing to his girlfriend Lily amongst the waves at Bondi, and his thoughtful nature and diplomacy, has made him a hit among the team. Deano is the 3rd Lifeguard to be an ambassador for Holeproof.
Corey Oliver:
During his 10 year career as a Lifeguard, Corey has worked on some of Sydney’s most-loved beaches from Clovelly, Maroubra, Coogee and Tamarama. An outdoor lover, Corey is the environmentalist in the pack, taking delight in the fact that his office is the beach.
Andrew Reid (Reidy):
Reidy overcame a challenging couple of seasons and now he’s back and better then ever. Reidy has asserted himself up the pecking order within the team and is now one of the most respected members.
Reidy brings great exhilaration to the screen with his ‘live by the edge of his seat’ attitude, with audiences undoubtedly warming to this energetic personality.
Trent Maxwell (Maxi):
The youngest ever lifeguard to work at Bondi, is also without doubt the keenest!
Hailing from Brighton le Sands 20-year-old 'Maxi' has grown up in the water competing in life saving contests and surfing all his young life. He is looking forward to a long and illustrious career by the ocean as his three year traineeship with the Lifeguards has finally resulted in a full time position.
Rod Kerr (Kerbox):
'Kerbox' as he's known to his mates, is a former top ranked professional surfer, renowned as the World Surfing Tour's Aussie larrikin.
After more than a decade travelling the world as one of the elite 'Top 44', Rod's experience riding the world's oceans, shaped him into a natural lifeguard.
Head Lifeguard Hoppo expects his team to give everything they've got. But with a maximum of eight lifeguards on duty at any one time, watching over more than 40,000 beach goers on a summer’s day, the question is sure to arise, "will that be enough?"
Performing around 2,500 rescues each season, with crowds exceeding 2.5 million people per year, these lifeguards certainly have their work cut out for them.
Bondi Rescue has attracted huge international interest and has been distributed worldwide including the UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark and New Zealand.
Helmet cams, new lightweight board mounted cameras, underwater photography and water proof sound equipment makes sure audiences get all the action of the dramatic rescues including close-up coverage in the surf.
Viewers are so close to the action and are entrenched in the importance of every second - the panic, breathlessness and interaction between the lifeguard and the victim. There is no doubt about it, Bondi Rescue celebrates the unsung heroes of Australia's best asset- the beach.
NEW CHALLENGES
Before Bondi Rescue began, lifeguarding was considered a narrow field of expertise involving iron men and women retrieving unwary swimmers from dangerous surf. Over the past three years, the public has witnessed lifeguards on Bondi catch thieves, treat heart attacks, make drug busts, break up fights, and even deal with a navy bomb which washed ashore late one afternoon.
Since then, the perception of what a lifeguard does has changed forever, and as Bondi continues to throw up new, unusual, and often bizarre challenges, the role of Bondi lifeguards continues to change as well.
One of the most densely populated beaches on the planet, Bondi attracts a unique mix of visitors, resulting in a place unlike anywhere on earth. At the heart of the madness, on a beach that can swell to 40,000 people, are a small team of dedicated professionals who must manage visitors with widely differing backgrounds, needs and intentions.
In 2009, they were faced with a new array of challenges unlike they've experienced before. How they adapt, is what makes Bondi Rescue a show that is about much more than just rescues.
